Syosset’s Children’s Orchestra Society Returns to Live Audience After 2-Year Pause - News 12 Long Island

The sister of the classical cellist Yo-Yo Ma is back to leading a student orchestra based in Syosset after live performances were halted for two years by the pandemic.

Yeou Cheng Ma runs the Children's Orchestra Society in Syosset. She says she was in her father’s orchestra when she was about 11 years old. She is now approaching 71.

Joshua Wang, who is a senior in high school, has been a violinist for the Children’s Orchestra Society since he was in seventh grade.

“For me, the most important part about music is sharing it with other people and for you to enjoy it and hopefully they enjoy it as well,” he says.

However, the group's love for live performance came to a halt when the pandemic started. Yeou Cheng Ma says they were forced to cancel their annual live show two years in a row.

This year they were finally able to return this year in front of an audience at the Lincoln Center in Manhattan. The three Discovery Winners from the past competitions were a part of the performance.

Yeou-Cheng Ma, Sister of Yo-Yo, Continues a Legacy - New York Times

In 1962, Leonard Bernstein, presiding over a fund-raiser in Washington called American Pageant for the Arts, introduced a 7-year-old cellist named Yo-Yo Ma. Among the honored guests were President John F. Kennedy — Jacqueline, too — and Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Yo-Yo, who had arrived to the United States from Paris a year earlier with his family, Bernstein said, would now perform the first movement of a concertino by Jean-Baptiste Bréval, accompanied at the piano by his 11-year-old sister, Yeou-Cheng Ma — who, Bernstein added, was “pursuing her musical studies.”

Their performance, which was televised (and can be seen online), was remarkable.

Several Garden City students spent the summer traveling abroad with a local youth orchestra, The Children’s Orchestral Society.

Abigail and Emma Benzinger, Savannah Ma, and Nathaneal Lau were among the members of the orchestra and enjoyed a three city tour of China.

The Children’s Orchestral Society is operated by Dr. Yeou Cheng Ma and Michael Dadap. Dr. Ma is the elder sibling of internationally renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma. This trip was timed with the opening of the Yo-Yo Ma museum at the Ma’s ancestral home in Ningbo. The tour was entitled “Home Return” and was a truly great event.

"ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y.—Nothing is as adorable as the sight of small children performing pizzicato in unison (or almost in unison).

Family and friends packed into the Madison Theatre at Long Island’s Molloy College on June 15 for a very out-of-tune, very endearing performance by the Kinder Orchestra, most of whose members are under the age of 6."
